LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES
The National Park Maranhenses was created on June 2, 1981 in an area of 155 hectares on the banks of sloths River in northeastern Maranhao state, distant about 260 km from São Luis, occupying a total area of 270 square kilometers with dunes up to 40 meters and freshwater ponds.
Location
This is a unique coastal ecosystem in the savanna biome, which combines strong winds and regular rains. It consists of a strip of dunes advancing between 5 and 25 km inland.
Sea, dunes and Caatingas
It is located in the municipalities of Barreirinhas, Humberto de Campos, First Cross, Amaro do Maranhao Santo and Paulino Neves.
Access is done by land by BR 135, by sea, entering the channel sloths River in Atins and through river, from Barreirinhas through sloths River.
Rio sloths, Mangue, Dunes and Ocean
By land, from São Luis, the state capital, runs 260 km to Barreirinhas.
The park is 2 km from Barreirinhas, across the Rio sloths, where it crosses ferry.There are tours using appropriate vehicles through which it gets down to the dunes and lagoons.
